I doubt I would be impressed with the story now, but at the time, the humorous snarky modern vampire genre hadn't been invented really and this seemed fresh and interesting. I had read PD Cacek's Canyons and Night Prayers, and liked both very much, so I thought I would like The Wind Caller, but it was just OK, maybe not even that. I didn't like any of the characters very much, although the native American mythology could have been quite interesting if done differently. P. D.
